Second declension latin endings1/1/2024 You'd need to study Indo-European linguistics to get any kind of decent handle on the origins of the different declensions, and even then much will remain mysterious. Please note the rearranged columns in the third declension.Ĭlick to expand. That's a rather difficult question to answer, to be honest, because the topic is very involved. If you spot an error or inconsistency, PLEASE TELL ME and I will fix it at the earliest opportunity.įirst of all: just a standard table showing the endings for declensions 1-3. And finally, the usual disclaimer: I’ve been studying Latin for about a month, so I’m a very much a beginner and this is simply my own best attempt at a study aid - I’ve done my best to make sure there are no errors in the charts, but I can’t guarantee it. The charts (with one exception) are cumulative so please do read them in order. In general, I have ignored nominative cases because they are so unpredictable (and by extension accusative singular in 3-N). I’ve also slightly rearranged the third-declension columns from what is found in most textbooks (for reasons which should quickly become apparent.) I have separated declensions 1-3 into four “declensions” for my purposes: 1-F, 2-M/F/N, 3-N, and 3-M/F (due to the complexity of the third declension). I’ll probably do a more complex version later when we’ve covered these declensions. I haven’t studied fourth or fifth declension yet, so they’re not included. (This will change a few things, but only a few.) I’ll probably do a macron-free version in the near future, though. My book uses macrons, so the chart uses macrons. Before we start, a few preliminary notes: People seemed to find it useful, so I thought I'd share something else I've been working on: a series of charts to help myself make sense of the noun/adjective endings for the first three declensions. A couple weeks ago I posted a color-coded chart for present-tense verb conjugations.
